Updates in bold added on 1/12/2006 after the show, to indicate if I was right or wrong with my rumour mongering.
Dateline: Monday, January 9, 2006. At approximately 8am, I will set forth upon my annual trek to MacWorld in San Francisco. Here’s what I’m looking forward to see. (Warning, some rumor mongering may follow.)
MacIntel - There is a lot of speculation on whether Apple will introduce an Intel based Macintosh 7 months ahead of schedule. I believe there is a slight chance of this, if anything it will send their stock through the roof. The thing is, I don’t believe it will be any Power-line Macintosh, it will be some consumer Mac (iBook, iMac or Mac mini). Considering the iMac was just refreshed, I think it’s out. The most likely, in my opinion, is the Mac mini - it is, afterall, the “switcher” machine, and what better to get PC users to switch than to see “Hey! This thing has Intel inside!” WRONG - Sort of. They did refresh the iMac, and who could have known about a “MacBook Pro”?
Macintosh Media Center - I don’t know about this. There have been rumors of a 42” Intel Viiv powered LCD display running OS X and special Apple software for this purpose. That is very Apple. I don’t think they would just release a box that connects to your TV. Apple likes to control the entire experience, and the only way they can do that is by making, essentially, a giant iMac with a television tuner. I think this is plausable. WRONG
iPods - I’m looking for some kind of gorgeous new iPod Shuffle here. WRONG
iWeb and iLife 06 - Already there have been reports that Apple “accidentally” released the name iWeb on their website. Interested to see what this is - a new browser? A Dreamweaver contender? Or a better version of GoLive!? Apple appears to be taking on Adobe slowly but surely, I supposed a HTML editor is the next step. As for iLife ‘06, I believe FrontRow will be bundled, with a cool IR interface for your current Macintosh - at least I hope. RIGHT - Except no FrontRow.
I suggest watching Macrumors.com as the Keynote comes to an end, they’ve always got fairly good round-ups of the rumours before hand, and then a time-coded reference to the SteveNote as it progresses.
On Tuesday night, I am signed up to attend the live podcast recording of TWiT, This Week in Tech. I am excited about this, it’s happening after the keynote and I’m looking forward to hearing some of my favorite tech-gurus talk about the day’s annoucnements. Not to mention that The Woz might potentially be there.? (Fingers crossed.)
UPDATE: It appears there is definitely going to be an update to .Mac service during the Keynote. Proof comes in the form of a service “outage warning.” It will be interesting to see what comes from this, here is the actual announcement:
“.Mac will be undergoing scheduled maintenance from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM PST on 1/10/06. All .Mac services will be affected. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
